The Lifecycle of Vintage Garments Tell a Story

The Salvage Revolution endeavors to make a historic record following items that are repurposed, restored, readapted, rescued, or remodeled. It isn’t only about salvage and redesign, there’s an integrity and memory to be preserved by vintage and antique pieces. In the early development of the concept for the company and its mission, we stumbled upon an example that clarified for us the vitality of the “raw materials” we were collecting.Meagan, our director of merchandising (and many other duties), had been insisting that we explore recycling uniforms as blank canvases for embellishment, something she saw as a fashion trend. In a vintage clothing store in a suburb of Dallas, we came upon a U.S. Army dress green uniform jacket. It appeared...

Vintage American Styling Meets Vintage Indian Saris

Here is an example of upcycled materials and vintage styling being hybridized to create The Salvage Revolution product. Our Sari Shirt is a Bohemian interpretation cut from a combination of five different vintage silk sari prints. Each sari is one-of-a-kind in our collection, yielding a maximum of 10 shirts in one combination. After the sari is sanitized, the shirts are cut one-at-a-time to best engineer print motif placement on each panel. This process is as far removed from “fast fashion” as can be imagined. Salvaged buttons are also utilized. The styling really speaks to the integrity of The Salvage Revolution agenda. From our archive, we have created the pattern for this shirt from a women’s bowling team shirt that probably...

Originally intended to be marketed as a product for women, he felt it was a flamboyant and risky choice. But, it was to be a day of meetings related to product and marketing, and he had the right shoes and shirt to “pull it off”. Had eight young men dressed in a “gangsta” style approached him on the street, he would have, admittedly, felt some level of threat, but less so...

Adam and Eve come full circle

.A significant force behind the artistic mission of The Salvage Revolution has been inspiration from the stories that follow vintage and antique pieces. Whether garments or decorative pieces, we share those legacies among our blog posts, and in some cases, we are adding a new chapter to the lives of the collected items. As a beginning, lets choose Adam and Eve. The creation of mankind might be interpreted by some as a campy place to begin, and we can’t deny that we enjoy any opportunity to make fun at our own expense. As with any interpretation of the Adam and Eve story, there’s a deep message about all humanity being descended from one family and a reminder that we share...
